Travelling to Botswana with children

You may have heard that South Africa dropped its requirement for children under 18 to have unabridged birth certificates to enter the country in late 2019.

Please note that this does NOT apply to Botswana: nothing has changed here and minor children still need to present a birth certificate to immigration officials when arriving in Botswana.

Children under 18 travelling with two parents have to produce the following documentation:

  • Certified copies of unabridged (i.e. unchanged and original) birth certificates
  • Passports valid for six month with at least six empty pages

Children travelling with one parent or a guardian must have:

  • Certified copies of unabridged (i.e. unchanged and original) birth certificates
  • Passports valid for six month with at least six empty pages
  • An affidavit from the living or custodial parent giving permission for the child to be travelling
